Youth & Young Adult Programs

Community Based Services for Mental Health

  1. Nuslhiixwta Pregnancy and Early Childhood Programs

    Nuslhiixwta, formerly Healthy Beginnings, is a non-profit Pregnancy Outreach/Early Childhood Development service with many programs to help Bella Coola Valley families with their pregnancy and raising their babies

  2. Nuxalk Nation Health & Wellness Services: Wilderness Treatment Center

    As of June 2021, this centre is still in development but will include many of the mental health services identified in the Nuxalk Healing Plan and delivered in a number of settings including a wilderness base camp & wilderness out camps, all to be located throughout Nuxalk Ancestral Territory.

  3. Ministry of Children and Family Development: Child & Youth Mental Health (CYMH)

    Children and youth can access free and voluntary community-based mental health supports and services in BC.

  4. Bella Coola Community Support Society: Women's Outreach Program

    This program is for: women or girls who have experienced violence or abuse and need help accessing the services they need, women who have recently left an abusive relationship and/or women who have just finished a stay in a transition house

Community Based Services for Substance Use

  1. Bella Coola Community Support Society: Addictions Services

    Addictions counselling for children, youth, adults, and families who have concerns about their own or someone else’s use of substances/chemicals, or behaviors. The service is voluntary, free of charge for client, and confidential.

  2. Alcoholics Anonymous

    AA meetings take place in the Adult Day Program room at the Bella Coola General Hospital at 1025 Elcho Street.

Community Based Services for Mental Health and Substance Use

  1. First Nations Health Authority: Telehealth

    Telehealth uses live, interactive videoconferencing to connect patients with health care providers. Telehealth allows First Nations individuals living in remote or rural areas to receive some health services without leaving their communities.

  2. Vancouver Coastal Health: Mental Health Worker

    Part of an interdisciplinary team that provides access to counseling and other resources. Counseling is available with local service providers, or Telehealth/Zoom clinicians from the Stepping Stones Substance Use Service in North Vancouver. Initial psychiatry appointments are accessed with a physician referral; for other services, people can refer themselves or be referred by others. This role works together with other hospital and community services to provide the most comprehensive services we can.

Hospital Based Services

  1. Vancouver Coastal Health: Bella Coola General Hospital

    The only 24/7 health care facility in the Bella Coola valley. It houses the only pharmacy in the valley, diagnostic services, the medical clinic, Public Health, Physiotherapy, Mental Health , Medical Social Work, and has 10 acute care beds and 5 long term care beds, there is no psychiatric unit or secure room. It offers voluntary MHSU services; people who have been certified under the mental health act must be transferred to a designated facility, as soon as possible.

General Community Services

  1. Bella Coola Legal Advocacy

    Free & confidential legal advocacy for: Housing, Income/Social Assistance, Police Accountability, Human Rights, Disability, Aboriginal legal issues, Elder issues, Child Protection, Family, Criminal, Legal Aid, Wills/Estates, EI, Employment, Pensions, etc.

  2. WorkBC Centre Bella Coola

    WorkBC Centres help find employment; able to access job search resources, employment planning, skills assessment, training, work experience opportunities and more.

  3. Bella Coola Community Support Society: Food Bank

    The Bella Coola Valley Food Bank began as an informal service operating out of the homes of a few local people who were concerned about hunger and malnutrition in Bella Coola.

  4. Nuxalk Transition House Society: Snxlhh Transition House

    Emergency shelter; domestic violence help

  4. Bella Coola Community Support Society: Victim Assistance

    Victim Assistance Program provides: support, information, transportation, referrals, and long-term counselling.

  5. Bella Coola Community Support Society Women's Services: Stopping the Violence Counselling

    This program is for : Women who have experienced sexual assault, Women who have experienced violence in their relationships (this could be physical, emotional, or psychological abuse) and Women who have experienced abuse as a child

  6. Bella Coola Community Support Society: Women's Outreach Program

    This program is for: women or girls who have experienced violence or abuse and need help accessing the services they need, women who have recently left an abusive relationship and/or women who have just finished a stay in a transition house

  4. Tsow Tun Le Lum Society: Substance Abuse and Trauma Treatment Centre

    Grounded in Aboriginal culture and tradition, this 40-day intensive residential program is available to First Nations people. Holistic in nature, the program is for those who are ready to put substance abuse behind them.

  4. Vancouver Coastal Health: Social Worker Case Manager

    Provides case management supports, systems navigation, & psychotherapy/counselling. The Social Worker collaborates with other clinicians in a patient’s circle of care and community partners such as Nuxalk Health and Wellness, to best support persons in their health and wellness journeys. The Social Worker is a Designated Responder trained in ReAct Adult Protection - connect with them for any concerns or suspicions about abuse, neglect and self-neglect with vulnerable adults.

    Aboriginal Patient Navigators are instrumental in supporting the delivery of culturally safe care and supporting improved patient experience for Indigenous clients and their families in the Bella Coola Valley.
